McLAREN FAITH IN HEIKKI

McLAREN FAITH IN HEIKKI

Kovalainen - backed to claim first win.

McLaren are confident Heikki Kovalainen will win his maiden grand prix sooner rather than later.

The Finn has failed to convert impressive qualifying stints into podium finishes since joining McLaren at the end of last season.

While his team-mate Lewis Hamilton has visited the podium four times, which includes first places in Australia and Monte Carlo, Kovalainen's third-place finish in Malaysia is his sole podium this season.

He is currently languishing in seventh position in the Drivers' Standings.

McLaren CEO Martin Whitmarsh, though, believes bad luck has blighted Kovalainen's chances of winning a race.

"Whilst there is underlying satisfaction with his personal performance, Heikki has suffered some misfortune, which has taken from him the opportunity to win his first grand prix," Whitmarsh said.

"But he is an extremely positive guy who realises that he has a great career ahead of him and there is no doubt that he is going to enjoy many grand prix victories during the course of his career."
