Over the years, the British Grand Prix has helped create many a Formula One legend.
Some of Britain's most famous sportsmen have driven to glory, backed by hordes of worshipping fans.
Here we take a look at some of motor sport's great British heroes.
NIGEL MANSELL (1980-1995) - The king of home heroes. 'Our Nige' whipped the Silverstone crowd into a never-seen-before frenzy with his aggressive style of racing. He claimed their support gave him an extra second a lap of speed while they would - and frequently did - climb over any obstacle in their way to mob their hero.
British Grand Prix wins: Four.
JAMES HUNT (1973-1979) - A true sporting playboy who struck a chord with British fans with his upper-class charm and wild lifestyle. He was not bad in a car either. Such was their devotion British fans at Brands Hatch threatened a riot in 1976 amid fears he would not be allowed to restart.
British Grand Prix wins: One.
DAMON HILL (1992-1998) - British fans felt every blow Hill suffered on the way to his eventual title success in 1996. His clashes with Michael Schumacher and his championship near-misses all struck a chord with a public used to supporting the underdog. A real people's champion.
British Grand Prix wins: One.
SIR STIRLING MOSS (1954-1961) - The man who made Formula One famous in Britain, and arguably the greatest driver never to win a world title. British drivers were not considered much good in a car before Moss rewrote the rule book. Over 40 years after a career-ending shunt, his name is as well known as ever.
British Grand Prix wins: Two.
JIM CLARK (1960-1968) - Britain's greatest driver. Lacked Mansell's exuberance, but had more natural ability than his peers, and some would say the most gifted driver to sit behind a wheel. Enjoyed phenomenal success in a career cut short by a fatal crash.
British Grand Prix wins: Five.
