
1948: The former World War Two airfield in Northamptonshire hosts its first grand prix on a 3.67-mile track.
1949: The Club chicane is removed and the circuit is transformed into the 2.926-mile shape that would remain for 25 years.
1950: Silverstone hosts the first Formula One world championship race, won by Giuseppe Farina.
1951: The British Racing Drivers' Club takes over running of the circuit from the RAC.
1973: South Africa's Jody Scheckter sparks a multiple pile-up after spinning on the exit of Woodcote, wiping out nine cars.
1975: A chicane is introduced to cut speeds through the fearsome Woodcote Corner.
1985: Keke Rosberg becomes the first man to average over 160mph at the circuit with a stunning qualifying lap in his Williams.
1987: Silverstone becomes the permanent home of the British Grand Prix after previously alternating with Brands Hatch since 1963.
1992: Damon Hill finishes his first grand prix in a Brabham which features major changes to the layout in order to again cut speeds.
1998: Michael Schumacher becomes the first driver to win a grand prix in the pits after taking advantage of a loophole in the rules which allowed him to serve a penalty after the race had ended.
1999: Schumacher breaks a leg after ploughing into a tyre barrier at Stowe.
2000: David Coulthard takes the chequered flag, and as such is the last British winner to claim victory. The race was overshadowed by heavy rains that turned the parking fields into mudbaths.
2003: A protester invades the track and parades a banner whilst running down Hangar Straight in front of cars travelling at nearly 200mph.
2007: Multi-million pound plans are revealed to improve facilities at a circuit long derided by Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone in the hope of securing the future of the race beyond 2009.
